What is an Indiana Education Scholarship Account (ESA)?

The Indiana Education Scholarship Account Program (also known as ESAP or ESA) is a unique program for students with disabilities such as dyslexia. This program offers government funding to families of students with disabilities that can be used to help pay for special education services, tutoring, and other educational expenses. The program is administered by the Indiana Department of Education and is completely funded by the state of Indiana.

To be eligible for ESAP, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled in a public or private school in Indiana

  • Have an current IEP, Service Plan (SP), or ESA Service Plan (ESA SP)

  • Meet the income eligibility requirements ($222,000 for a family of 4)

The amount of funding that a student receives through ESAP is based on their family's income. Those approved for an ESA could be awarded between $5,436 and $19,187 based on the school district and the student’s disability.

ESAP funds can be used to pay for a variety of educational expenses, including but not limited to:

  • Tutoring

  • Private school tuition/fees

  • Special education services such as testing

  • Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) services

  • Transportation

  • Supplies

  • Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services

ESAP provides families with more choices in education. It allows students to receive the individualized education they need and can save families money on education costs such as tutoring. ESAP is a great option for families who are looking for a way to provide their child with a quality education that meets their individual needs.
