Frequently Asked Questions

What is your teaching experience/credentials?

I am an experienced teacher with four years of classroom teaching as well as multiple years of substitute and student teaching. I have been a private dyslexia tutor for almost two years. I have my Master of Arts in Teaching degree from Point Loma Nazarene University and am currently working on my Reading Science Certificate at Mount St. Joseph University. I hold two California teaching credentials: a Mild/Moderate Education Specialist that enables me to teach students with disabilities and a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential that allows me to teach at the elementary level as well as a K-12 Mild Intervention and Elementary Generalist teaching license in Indiana. I am also one of the only certified Orton-Gillingham educators in Fort Wayne.

Where do you hold your teaching sessions?

I hold my online tutoring sessions on Zoom. You will receive the link after booking.

I hold in-person tutoring in my home office in Northwest Fort Wayne, IN.

What supplies do I need during online lessons?

During online tutoring your child will need IMSE's "O-G in a Bag" supply kit. It contains everything you need for virtual Orton-Gillingham learning including:

  • Sensational Sand and tray with sealable storage bag

  • Red & Green crayons 1 each

  • Tiles 2 each of 5 colors

  • Desktop Essentials (Elkonin boxes, vowel cards, house paper, alphabet strip, fingertapping cards, alphabet cards)

  • Red Word Booklet

  • Multi-sensory Screen

  • Dry Erase Paddle and Marker

You will also need to provide an email to access our word lists, readers, and additional resources.

How do you charge for your teaching services?

I put in a lot of research into determining what to charge for tutoring sessions. As a credentialed teacher with a master's degree and Orton-Gillingham training, I took into account my previous teaching salary and benefits plus the costs of owning a business. Orton-Gillingham tutoring ranges from $65-$200 an hour. The national average for OG tutoring is $109 per hour. I wanted to make my tutoring sessions affordable while still offering the quality service of a certified, licensed, and experienced teacher. Prepping for tutoring lessons, which takes between 20-30 minutes each session, is also factored in.

How many sessions should I have each week?

I recommend two sessions per week for in person or online tutoring (45-60 minutes per session).

According to the Orton-Gillingham Academy, the most common instructional pattern of Orton-Gillingham practitioners is the 1:1 model. This model includes at least two independent sessions per week, each with a duration of 40-60 minutes on non-consecutive days.

*At least one hour per week is required for tutoring.

What is your payment and cancellation policy?

You will receive a tutoring invoice at the end of each calendar month that outlines session dates and times. I accept Venmo, PayPal, cash, check or you may pay with a credit card online. I am also proud to accept funds from the Indiana Education Scholarship Program as payment to make tutoring accessible to more families.

I understand that life happens and there are occasions when you will need to miss tutoring. I ask for a 24 hour notice if you will be missing a session. If a cancellation is made less than 24 hours before an appointment, you will be charged for 50% of that session.
